The rapid growth of the Anglican Church of Kenya in Maasai land led to the establishment of the Diocese of Kajiado in 1993 after it was curved out of the mother Diocese of Nairobi. One of the biggest challenges since then has been availability of adequate water supply for the diocese at its headquarters in Kajiado Town.
After several meetings and interviews led by the diocesan Bishop, Rt Rev Gadiel Lenini, Water for the World was selected as the contractor to drill and equip a borehole at the church. Working in collaboration with hydrogeologists, environmentalists and other experts, the required statutory documentation was sourced and ready by the close of 2019.
The crews were enthusiastic to kick off with this first borehole of the year. On 9th January equipment was mobilized to site and on the first day drilled 140 meters. The borehole was drilled up to 240 meters the next day and subsequently cased and developed.
A 24-hour test pump revealed an impressive yield of 7 cubic meters an hour, a feat for a region not known to have high yielding boreholes. After discussions and advise from Water for the World engineers, it was decided that a solar pumping system would serve the church best.
This was successfully installed and the church is now enjoying an uninterrupted water supply powered by nature’s own sunshine which is plenty in Kajiado.
The diocese is now projecting faster implementation and growth of its sustainability projects including a hospital, housing estate, commercial offices and a guesthouse, thanks to availability of adequate water.
